Rest As An Appointment
How our good intentions derail us
You put it on the calendar and tell yourself you’re going to rest. Time passes. Your scheduled rest gets closer still. The closer you get, the more you start treating that time as less of a commitment and more of a whim.
“What if I did something ‘productive’ instead?
“Do I really need that much time?”
“I can do this anytime really…”
Suddenly the choice becomes an option.
Treating your rest as an appointment is never a bad idea. It’s just an incomplete one if you tend not to honor it. You don’t just need to put it on the calendar, you also need the kind of accountability that comes from other people’s presence.
When no one’s there to keep you on track or model what you’re there to do, it can be easy to get bored, disinterested, or distracted. But when there is someone else there, it makes it much easier to show up. This kind of accountability is called body doubling and is a term familiar to those in the neurodivergent community. It can help overcome executive dysfunction and help you focus.
I’ve seen how effective this is in helping people be productive in communities like FLOWN or Caveday. But what if we applied this to rest?
That’s the joy of Recess.
There’s no need for decision fatigue because we set the time and space for you already. You simply have to show up.
I first started Recess waaaaay back in 2021 but didn’t think it was “the” offer. I thought it was coaching. Offering you space didn’t seem worthwhile enough. I was too deep in the online business high ticket offer sauce. I thought depth was the answer. But you didn’t come to the shore for diving lessons. You came to dip your toes in the ocean and watch the sunset. You came for a break from the chaos of reality.
For the times we’re living in, getting you to rest, especially joyful rest, should be the priority.
So consider this your invitation to Recess. It’s a simple setup. Join me on Fridays and Sundays at 1 p.m. cdt. I guide you through our own rest method to prepare you to rest. Then you get one hour of uninterrupted rest time. See others (myself included) resting or discussing it in chat. When the hour is over, stay to discuss or go on your merry way.
It’s simple, intentional, and built for you. I’m here to hold space for your rest. Join me in Recess.
P.S. Consider this my NPR level pledge drive lol. I’m fundraising for my tuition in an eight month long writing program that will help me finish my book on joyful rest. Consider joining Recess for the month, quarter, or year. Or you can send me a tip on Ko-Fi. Every bit helps. Thanks in advance!
